History

[edit]

Around 1890 Members of the Evangelical Baptist Church moved into the Weiner area from Illinois after buying land from a shady land dealer. When they arrived, they found that the land was swampy, and very hard to farm. The mosquitos and malaria led to the small church cemetery that was later combined with a community cemetery, but due to these poor conditions a church was never built.

The Jacob Pfister family of Zurich, Switzerland was one of the first to arrive. While immigrating to the US, he met his future wife aboard the boat, She was disinherited by her family for joining the church to marry him in 1878. Soon after their wedding, they purchased land, and moved down to Weiner. After 2 years in Weiner, they moved to Indian Territory near Burlington, OK before moving to Fort Scott, KS in 1900.

Another family that moved to the Weiner area was Johann Georg Sinn, a minster(possibly elder), from Neuhütten Germany. He is said to have been a very charismatic leader, and a good sized group from Neuhütten had followed him across the sea, and down to Arkansas. This group moved north to Fort Scott, KS in 1895.
