History

[edit]

Beginning in 1911, many families of the Apostolic Christian faith began moving to farms in the Latty, Ohio area. The number of families of our faith who moved to Latty from 1911 to 1920 is quite impressive. These families, who were primarily from congregations in Illinois and Indiana, were interested in the lower priced land of the Black Swamp which covered all of Paulding County. Picking up and moving to this new area was no easy task for these farmers. Most of them arrived with all their belongings via the train. Once here, they had to clear and drain the land as they set up their farmsteads.

On August 12, 1913, the brethren here - who previously attended worship services at Junction, Ohio - purchased thirty-four church pews. These benches were used for the first Latty worship services which were held primarily in a vacant house on the John A. Stoller farm. However on October 15, 1914, Lot 64 which had an old church building in the village of Latty was purchased. After much repair and additions were completed, the new church was dedicated on February 21, 1915.

In the coming years, other changes took place. More families arrived. Ministers were appointed to preach. The use of the English language instead of German was implemented. The flu epidemic of 1920-21 caused many deaths but brought on many converts. And by 1948, a larger church building seemed necessary.

As we have striven to meet the needs of our congregation, further developments have occurred. Our current building was dedicated on September 20, 1951 with 147 families and 251 members. In 1982 our Fellowship Hall was built just north of the church building. An independent living facility, Apostolic Christian Country Villa, was added in 2001. In 2004, the Country Inn Enhanced Living Center, an assisted living facility, was built nearby. A major church building addition was completed in 2005.

Today, the Latty Apostolic Christian Church includes 206 members and approximately 100 children in Sunday School.
